THE BENEFITS OF HYALURONIC ACID ON THE SKIN
November 1, 2024 - Tutorials and advice
With age, wrinkles start to appear and sometimes become permanent. To slow down the effects of skin ageing, hyaluronic acid is the key molecule to incorporate into your beauty routine. Here is everything you need to know about this active ingredient found in anti-wrinkle creams.
WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?
Naturally present in the intercellular spaces of the dermis, hyaluronic acid plays an important role in our body. In addition to moisturising and protecting the skin from external aggressions, it can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, helping to rebuild the skin’s structure and maintain its tone and elasticity.
Over time, its quantity within the body reduces. It is thought that we lose around 6% of our hyaluronic acid every year. This deficiency leads to a loss of skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles.
As such, it’s important to choose a cream and serum with hyaluronic acid to moisturise and plump the skin, as well as to smooth wrinkles.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HYALURONIC ACID
There are two types of hyaluronic acids, which are not the same size and therefore do not have the same benefits on the skin:
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid
This form of hyaluronic acid has the largest molecule size. It acts on the surface of the epidermis, forms a non-occlusive protective film and doesn’t absorb into the skin barrier. It helps to retain water in the cells and keep the skin hydrated. It is a perfect ally for skin that has only slightly been affected by skin ageing.
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid
This is a micro-molecule that will absorb deep into the skin thanks to its small size. What does it target? It acts in the layers of the epidermis, boosts collagen production and plumps the skin from the inside.
As you can see, hyaluronic acid is an essential active ingredient for all those who wish to take care of their skin throughout their lives.
